5 domestic products which are potential carcinogens

For making our day to day life easier we have dwelled upon lethal chemical-rich products, It can’t be denied that they resolve daily requirements in a jiffy but return, it takes a lot from our health, most of them are potential carcinogens. The major cause of increasing cases of cancer is maximum interaction with poisonous domestic products. Here presenting you the list of top 5 potential carcinogens we are using daily:

  1. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling chemical that is used in a range of domestic products, from cosmetics, deodorizers, perfumed creams or soaps to plastic paints, wood polishes, pressed wood, etc. It seems it has inbred in our day to day life and we can’t dwell without it. The way it is solving many day-to-day issues in return it is taxing a lot on our health. As per the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has researched that this chemical undergoes instant chemical transformation after absorption through the nasal passage and get absorbed by the blood. Some laboratory studies suggest that formaldehyde may affect the lymphatic and hematopoietic systems. Based on both the epidemiological data from cohort and case-control studies and the experimental data from laboratory research, NCI investigators have concluded that exposure to formaldehyde may cause leukemia, particularly myeloid leukemia, in humans. We can limit the exposure of formaldehyde by avoiding pressed-wood furniture, use natural perfumes instead of deodorants, limit perfumed cosmetics, keep your house properly ventilated, and reduce humidity levels through the use of air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Please check formaldehyde levels before buying.
  2. Chlorine:
    Chlorine is generally used as a disinfectant for domestic purposes it restricts the growth of bacteria and fungus-like E.coli, molds, giardia, etc. Mostly it is used in sterilization of tap water for drinking, in swimming pools, like bleach for washing, etc. but its action doesn’t restrict the termination of the microbes it is causing severe health hazards to us and other environment-friendly living organisms. Drinking chlorine disinfected water for a prolonged period may cause dementia to elderly people, using the swimming pool with chorine enriched water causes symptoms of asthma, eye and skin irritation in swimmers and using it as a bleach you may experience burns, difficulty breathing, chest pains, cough, eye irritation, increased heartbeat, and rapid breathing. It is a potent explosive that may cause choking and death. We can avoid usage of chlorine by replacing it with other substitutes like instead of drinking chlorinated water use distilled water or install a water purifier, for swimming pool use silver-copper ion generators and saltwater, along with that avoid home cleaning products which contain chlorine.
  3. Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats):
    These compounds sounds like sci-fi or core component of scientific experiment which we do not relate ourselves in day to day life but it is one of the chemicals we are using daily to keep our house and ourselves neat and tidy, it is used in cleaning of floor, tile, furniture, walls, also incorporated in hair conditioners, shampoos, and even lotions, to impart a slippery feel to the hair and skin, etc. But it is not beneficial to our health and environment these chemicals cause skin and respiratory irritation, and some people are highly allergic to them. Second, some quaternary ammonium compounds, like benzalkonium chloride, are phenolic and be endocrine disruptors, meaning they interfere with hormone function within the body. Third, they are toxic to aquatic life, so they’re not good for the environment when washed downstream. Quarantines are a class of plant growth retardants which obstructs the plant growth cycle also. These chemicals can be replaced easily by using natural antimicrobial products like vinegar, baking soda, neem extract, etc.
  4. Volatile organic compounds(VOCs):
    These are highly volatile compounds because of high vapour pressure which gives them the property of rapidly spreading in a closed compound, therefore, these chemicals are present at high concentrations indoors. VOCs are present in many household products like Cigarettes, Solvents, Paints and thinners, Adhesives, craft supplies, Dry cleaning fluids, Wood preservatives, Air fresheners, Building materials, and furnishings, etc. Prolonged exposures to volatile compounds irritate the eyes and respiratory tract, headaches, dizziness, visual disorders, memory problems and worst it can cause cancer. The best way to minimize the effect of VOCs is to keep good ventilation and minimalistic usage of products consisted of Volatile organic compounds.
  5. Insecticide:
    These chemicals are broadly used in agriculture, medicine, industry, etc but after the occurrence of these insects at home, we have started these lethal products like mosquito killers, cockroach killers, lizard killers, etc. for domestic use. These are composed of pyrethroids, rotenoids, nicotinoids, strychnine, and scilliroside but pests have systems similar to the human system, maximum pesticides also can harm or kill humans. Fortunately, humans usually can avoid harmful effects by avoiding being exposed to pesticides. Continuous or frequent exposures over a long period making it more likely genetic changes that result in the development of cancer. Domestic pests can be avoided by mild natural pesticide which will not affect our health.
